What are settling visits and how do they work?

Settling visits are short visits before your child’s official start date that help them become familiar with their new childcare environment. Settling visits give children the opportunity to meet teachers, explore the space and begin adjusting to new routines alongside a parent or caregiver.

Every child settles differently, so settling visits can be tailored to suit your child’s needs and your family’s circumstances. Some children are comfortable after one or two visits, while others benefit from a more gradual introduction.

At BestStart, we work with families to plan settling visits that help children build confidence and feel comfortable in their new environment. These visits also give parents the opportunity to get to know the teaching team, ask questions and share information about their child’s routines, preferences and care needs.

Good to know

  • There is no right or wrong way to settle. Some children need more time than others to feel comfortable.
  • Settling visits are a great opportunity to ask questions and learn about daily routines, communication and care practices.
  • Sharing information about your child’s interests, routines and comfort strategies can help teachers support a smoother transition.
