What happens if my baby needs to sleep when other children are awake?
Babies are able to sleep when they need to, rather than at set group sleep times. Following individual sleep cues helps ensure babies get the rest they need and supports their wellbeing, development and daily routine.
Sleep needs vary significantly during the first few years of life, and many babies require sleep at different times throughout the day. A responsive approach to sleep means recognising when a baby is tired and providing opportunities for rest when needed.
At BestStart, babies have access to designated sleep spaces that provide a calm environment for rest. Our teachers follow individual sleep routines wherever possible and respond to each baby's cues throughout the day. Sleeping areas are regularly monitored and supervised, allowing babies to rest safely while other children continue with their learning and play.
Good to know
- Younger babies often have multiple sleeps throughout the day, so individual sleep schedules are common in early childhood settings.
- Changes to sleep patterns can sometimes be linked to teething, developmental milestones, illness or changes at home.
- If your baby is sleeping significantly more or less than usual, it’s helpful to let your teachers know so they can provide the best possible support.
