Connecting with our local community is a priority for BestStart Girven Road. One way we have been doing this is by having our local librarians visit us.

Once a term, a librarian from our local library comes into the centre to read books and sing with our tamariki. These visits are full of excitement and wonder, engaging our tamariki and further establishing their love of books. The librarian visits are an immersive experience, with the librarian calling on our tamariki to be involved in the books and songs. Whether that be pushing a "button" on a page, sharing their ideas, or dancing with colourful scarves.

Songs sung in te reo Maori are a particular highlight for our tamariki, with a waiata about the weather being enjoyed on this particular visit. Books allow tamariki to visit new worlds, expand their imaginations, learn about a variety of topics and connect with the wider world. Reading with tamariki also supports their oral language and literacy and is an opportunity to connect with them and share ideas.

I wonder what might happen next? How do you think they will get out of this situation? It's never too early to instill a love of reading with our tamariki and we are so grateful to be able to have our lovely local librarians come and share the joy of books.
