On 15th August 1947, India was declared independent from the British government. It was a significant celebration for India as they were declared a free country. We commemorate this day to show respect to the numerous Indian individuals who devoted themselves to serving our nation and gave up everything to regain its independence.

It is also a time to celebrate the rich Indian culture and heritage, which has left a lasting impression on the global stage. The Indian national anthem, "Jana Gana Mana," is performed to embrace this culture and we had a lot of learning experiences with the children, painting, creating a collage of the national flag, face painting, and singing the national anthem of India.

This learning experience aids children with their fine motor skills and helps them learn about bi-culturalism in our Early learning center. As stated in Te whariki, ‘Early childhood education professionals embrace and provide support for the diverse cultures present in their environment in response to the evolving demographic context.’ Through this Indian celebration, children were able to recognise their own culture on this Independence Day, as well as their peers.

Happy Independence Day!
