Set to School Mat Time
Children aged 4 and over take part in dedicated Set to School mat times. These sessions introduce school-like routines where tamariki practise:

School Readiness Badges
Our over-4 tamariki proudly wear their Set to School badges during mat times. These special badges symbolise their role as school-ready learners, fostering a sense of pride, responsibility, and belonging.

Home Reading – Books to Read at Home with Whānau
To reflect school practices, children borrow reading books in their own Set to School book bags. Books go home on Thursdays or Fridays and are returned on Monday mornings. This routine teaches responsibility and encourages a love for reading at home.

BestStart Ascot Avenue Library
Our in-centre library is open to all age groups, with children borrowing books by signing them in and out. Library access is thoughtfully rotated each term, giving every child the opportunity to develop a connection with books and literacy.

Partnership with Whānau and Local Schools
We believe strong relationships with whānau and schools are essential for a successful transition to school. As part of our programme, we organise:

Information sessions for whānau
Individualised transition visits to local primary schools
Opportunities for children to meet new teachers and explore school environments

These visits help tamariki become familiar with the school setting, easing their transition and building confidence for their first day.
